I Definition and Legitimacy

Association Law 1901

The French College of Implantology is an Association under the Law of 1901 founded in 1994 and registered with the Ministry of Employment as a postgraduate vocational training body under approval no. 11752629975.

II Degree Course Programme

The yearly degree course takes place in several successive and inter-dependent stages:

the 1st stage of the course is dedicated to the study of the basic principles specific to implantology;
the 2nd stage of the study deals with all of the surgical techniques;
the 3rd stage deals with prosthetic implant systems.

Breaks will be envisaged during the courses, during which the manufacturers of materials will have exhibition stands permitting the presentation and the handling of their different products.

An examination will be held, in the form of a multiple-choice questionnaire, to test the knowledge acquired and to validate this teaching with a view to the obtaining of the end of year diploma.

1. Basic principles

The purpose of the French College of Implantology's cyclical teaching programme is to define clear basic principles in the development of an implant treatment plan thanks to a clinical approach based on the surgical and prosthetic stages. Every course will benefit from a double-projection slide presentation, or if the need arises, videos or CD-ROMs. Duplicated lecture notes will be given to each student.

The first course modules will endeavour to specify the clinical, anatomical and radiographical aspects essential to the formulation of an implant treatment plan. The development of the treatment plan and the initial examinations required will be dealt with first.

The implant imagery necessitates the analysis of long cone x-rays, panoramic radiography and scanners by studying various implant scenarios on the x-rays. Simulations of clinical cases will be achieved using different scanner cross-sections.

During the courses and practical work on anatomical specimens, the parodontology and occlusion situation will be seen in detail, always within the specific context of the implant.

The medico-legal aspects of our specialty becoming increasingly important, an expert conference illustrating actual cases will be held in the presence of magistrates of the Court of Appeal and the Paris Supreme Court of Appeal, lawyers, judicial experts and insurance professionals.

2. Surgical techniques

Parodontal surgery

The parodontology adapted to the act of implantation will be studied at the time of the theoretical courses and sessions involving parodontal dissections on the jaws of pigs.

Oral surgery

Any implanting activity implies detailed analysis of the bone structure and the gingival development. The bone formation will be explained through the presentation of biomaterials and bone graft techniques.

The surgical approach takes the form of dissection sessions on real heads from corpses, in order to determine the main dissection planes and the initial manoeuvres essential to all implant surgery techniques. This session will enable the participants to firstly see the maxillary and mandibular canals, and then filmed projections.

Insertion of implants

These sessions will enable students to familiarise themselves with the different facets of this activity (incisions, sutures) with the insertion of the implants on each of the anatomical specimens. Local anesthesia techniques and the risks inherent in every anatomical region will be examined in detail.

Organisation of the practical work

During the dissection sessions, students will work in groups of 2 or 3 on the anatomical specimens at their disposal consisting of heads from corpses.

All of the implant manufacturers, in partnership with the French College of Implantology, will make motors, contra-angles and implants available so that every student can operate and get to know the different implant systems currently available on the market.

The partnership with the pharmaceutical and medical companies will enable students to familiarise themselves with the materials (surgical gowns, gloves, masks). Sterile clothing techniques and the preparation of the operating tray under optimal conditions of asepsis will be illustrated by a video. A session will also be organised in which sterile clothing will be worn and these different sterile products will be handled.

Every student should bring a box of parodontology instruments (a list will be provided for these surgical sessions).

3. Prosthetic solutions

The third part of the course will be dedicated to the subject of prosthetics and the study of every prosthetic system, both in terms of partial prostheses and those directly attached to implants. The importance of this part of the course on prosthetics means that several half-day sessions will be dedicated to practical work.

Many prosthetic systems will be analysed under the auspices of the teachers of the French College of Implantology and the representatives of the partner implant companies (3i France, Friadent, Straumann, Calcitek, Implants Diffusion International, Nobel Biocare, Sud Implant).

In addition, several days organised with these implant companies will illustrate the handling of these systems, as well as the presentation of various clinical cases in which impacted systems, which are screwed in on 1 or 2 occasions, will be tackled. The management of failures and the study of budgets will also be part of this section of the course.

III Location of the training

The Biomedical Training & Research Unit of the Saints-Pères Faculty of Medicine (Anatomy department) will put its dissection rooms and lecture theatres at the disposal of students for all of the Practical Work.

A reminder of the timetables and location of each of the course modules will be sent to the students before the beginning of the course. Any change in the location of the course will be indicated in advance. Attendance on the course is obligatory (except in the case of absolute necessity).

Meals will be able to be taken in the restaurants in the vicinity and will be at the expense of the participants.

IV Materials

Every student should bring a box of surgical instruments a list of which will be provided.

All of the dissection materials (gloves, masks, surgical gowns, suture thread) will be provided by the French College of Implantology.

The number of the students being limited every year, the enrolments will be processed in the order of arrival of the enrolment files.

The enrolment will only be confirmed after acceptance of the file by the French College of Implantology and remittance of a booking deposit. The balance of the fees should be paid no later than 2 weeks before the beginning of the courses. All payments should be made out to “Collège Français d'Implantologie”, who will issue a receipt. Any cancellation of an enrolment will incur expenses, which are not refundable.

Course participants are obliged by the Biomedical Training and Research Unit of the Saints-Pères Faculty of Medicine to take out personal civil liability insurance for the dissection sessions. This insurance policy should very clearly mention that the insured can take part in the dissection of corpses. If the policy does not specifically refer to this point any possibility of enrolling in this degree course will be excluded. The photocopy of this civil liability insurance should be addressed to the French College of Implantology.

Likewise the Biomedical Training and Research Unit of the Saints-Pères Faculty of Medicine requires students to be immunised against hepatitis, diphtheria, tetanus and poliomyelitis (DT-polio) before the beginning of the degree course. A photocopy of the vaccination certificate should be addressed to the French College of Implantology.

Overview

The French College of Implantology was founded some 15 years ago by practitioners from various backgrounds (dental surgeons, stomatologists, maxillofacial surgeons, dental technicians, radiologists) all of whom were interested in implantology, at a time when this discipline was seldom taught. This group, under the aegis of Doctor GUILLAUME, has been obliged to reflect on what would be the best ways of disseminating these techniques, confirmed by the scientific community but also by the constant innovation and progress in surgery and prosthetic implants.

Comprehensive teaching

The practitioners of the French College of Implantology considered that the most adaptable way of conveying this knowledge was to organise a theoretical teaching programme especially incorporating practical work, thus allowing the colleagues trained by the College to start implantology work in their own practices.

An extensive reputation

Thanks to its former pupils, today the fame of the French College of Implantology has spread internationally. A directory lists all of the former pupils. Some fraternal links have been developed thanks to the organisation of international conventions and by the distribution of this directory showing all of the previous promotional activities.

A programme that has yielded tangible results

Year by year, due to the voluntary work of its members and more than 20 confirmed practitioners, the French College of Implantology has obtained the recognition of the profession and the public authorities. In 15 years, 600 practitioners have been trained in this discipline.

An exchange

The association with the Faculty of Medicine in Angers, allows practitioners who graduate from the French College of Implantology to enrol in the University Diploma course (Calcified tissues, Biomaterials, Dental implantology).

The CFI at a glance

The CFI provides a yearly teaching programme intended for dental surgeons and stomatologists, the goal of which is the introduction and perfection of dental implantology through the study of fundamental clinical concepts and surgical-prosthetic procedures linked to this specialty.

The French College of Implantology founded in 1994 is a private postgraduate vocational training body registered with the Ministry of Employment (n°11752629975).

In the course of each academic year, many practitioners learn the theoretical and practical elements of dental implantology.

This postgraduate vocational training in implantology consists of three inter-dependent stages.

1. The aquisition of the specific theoretical principles relating to oral surgery and more especially to implant surgery.
Definition of the treatment plans.
Occlusion concepts, parodontology, oral surgery, asepsis, imagery, medico-legal aspects, budgets.

2. Modules involving practical work.
Sessions dedicated to practical work on parodontology.
Practical work on oral and maxillofacial dissections.
Practical work on the insertion of implants (various systems).

3. Prostheses on implants.
Presentation of several implant systems.
Handling and analysis of the prosthetic devices.
Making prostheses on implants in the laboratory.

In addition to its vocational training activity the French College of Implantology aims to develop a process for exchanging information on the new developments in this specialty.

During the course of each module, a great deal of importance is attached to dialogue and interactive communication in order to best respond to the demands of the practitioners with regard to the practical problems encountered in daily practice.

Every module is the subject of a quality control in order to improve the content and presentation of the courses. Finally, a directory of former students is handed to each of the practitioners at the end of every academic year.

Every year the CFI organises a convention abroad (USA, TURKEY, SPAIN, ISRAEL shortly) in order to discover the technical developments and to encourage exchanges between alumni.

Des réunions professionnelles sont aussi organisées avec la Faculté de Médecine d'ANGERS (service des Professeurs BASLE et CHAPPARD).
